Martha Meta Griesert, daughter of Herman and Clara Oberheu Brase, was born April 13, 1928, in Douglas Township of rural Bremer County, Iowa.She was baptized May 6, 1928, by Rev. H. Raum and confirmed March 29, 1942, by Rev. R.H. Steege at St. John Lutheran Church, Western Douglas of rural Plainfield.
On September 14, 1952, she was united in marriage with Robert E. Griesert at St. John Lutheran Church, Western Douglas by Rev. G.H. Brase. At one time, Martha had been employed at Bremer Pack and Marshall Canning Factory in Waverly and later worked as an aide and custodian at Sumner Schools before retiring in 1992.
Martha’s death occurred early Monday, April 2, 2012, at the Waverly Health Center. She was eighty-three years old and a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. She enjoyed attending and holding garage sales with her sisters and sharing a pot of coffee with family and friends. She especially treasured the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by one son, Mitch (Karla) Griesert of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska; two daughters, Brenda (John) Kraemer of Marion and Lori Griesert of Garner; five grandchildren, Katie, Ben, Emily, and Jake Kraemer and Peyton Griesert; one brother, Jon (Candy) Brase of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; two sisters, Wilma Cooley and Rosamond Hoffman, both of Waverly; two sisters-in-law, Barb Brase of Frederika and Margene Clayton of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on February 3, 1988; an infant daughter, Sue Lynn, in 1966; her parents; one sister, Selma Carroll; and three brothers, Paul, Jerry, and Robert Brase.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 5, 2012, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. George Volkert officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday. Interment will be at Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township.
